Åsa Cederqvist
Åsa Cederqvist’s practice lies at the intersection of visual art, film and choreography. Her ongoing exploration of becoming through performative gestures feeds the production of sculptural objects and film works in a symbiotic relationship.
Through intuitive play, studying alternative forms of knowledge production, and personal development, Cederqvist makes herself sensitive to what she calls “everyday magic”. Within this process of physical understanding, non-rational and multi-layered communication takes precedence.
Cederqvist’s multifaceted practice is presented in the biennial through video, sculpture, installation, and photography. Together the works speak of worlds that sit somewhere between conscious awareness and the subconscious, the ephemeral and the physical. Works explore themes of transformation and interconnectedness, continued research into the cycle of tearing down and rebuilding. Cederqvist views water as our main natural resource, the importance of the earthworm, and a spirituality and longing beyond the rational and anthropocentric world we live in.
Åsa Cederqvist lives and works in Stockholm and Berlin. Recent solo and group exhibitions include: Kraft Bergen, Bergen (2020); Kunsthal Rønnebæcksholm, Denmark (2020); Färgfabriken, Stockholm (2020); Momentum 10, Moss, Norway (2019); Kunsthaus Hamburg (2017); Österängens konsthall, Jönköping (2016); La Capella, Barcelona (2014); Wetterling Gallery, Stockholm (2009, 2013, 2015); Varbergs Konsthall (2012); and Bonniers Konsthall, Sweden (2008).
